What’s it All About?

Without self-development, life become stagnant and frustrating. One of the best methods of development is through improving yourself, learning more and either implementing it in your life or just being happy in the satisfaction that you achieved such an accomplishment.

Lots of people pursue education through formal means, attending night-school or, more often than not, embarking on expensive University or College degrees. What many of these academic institutions don’t tell you however, is that in 95% of the cases, their over-priced curriculum can be taught to you at a much cheaper price and even free…it can be taught to you….by you.

Self-education is the process of educating yourself on a topic, whether theoretical or practical. All it requires is dedication, focus, a little bit of planning and a whole lot of motivation.

Dedication and focus are essential components in the mix. Without both, it will be easy to be distracted from what you are trying to achieve. A bit like a child who doesn’t pay attention in class, nothing will stick in your head. Motivation is also closely linked, as if you are not motivated to fulfil an allocated amount of time to your studies, you won’t complete them or worse, you will make very little progress.

A little planning is needed before self-educating yourself on a topic, the most important being collecting the resources you will use, followed by setting a study timetable and a plan of action. Which subjects will you study first? Will you use one textbook or two? Will you go through the chapters in the same order or skip a few? The choice is yours, but it’s a good idea to have a plan beforehand.

My own self-development includes self-education, most recently in new languages. By learning languages I can connect with the world and learn more about different peoples and cultures, how they deal with triumph and tribulation and what can be learnt from that. Do they deal with adversity with a smile? And how could I embrace such a beautiful attitude to life?

Life is nothing if it is stagnant. Stagnation can come in many forms, but it’s ultimate base is the lack of self-development; the action of living life the same way, holding the same opinions unchallenged and being exactly the same from youth until old age.

My attitude to life is simple. Continue to develop. Develop until you are at a wonderful peace within yourself, and that you are content with everything, both good and bad. Develop until complaint no longer exists and you are thankful for every blessing in your life, however small. Educate yourself to know how to develop. Educate yourself to develop.

About Me

I am a playwright, traveller and language addict. As such, for the last few years I have been experimenting a lot with self-eduction, teaching myself everything from languages to philosophy, economics to theology, and found it’s incredible impact on self-development. I want to get the most out of life and love learning how productive I can really be! And so I have three aims for the remainder of the year:

  1. To reach an intermediate level of Chinese in 3 months. This will include reading, writing and speaking.
  2. To have a play chosen for a Broadway theatre by the end of the year.
  3. To learn how to meditate to the ultimate degree where I am able to truly block out all distractions and focus entirely upon a sacred connection

My website contains articles, ideas and methods I have used and continue to use in my pursuit. I hope that you find them interesting and illuminating. Most of all, I really would like to know of any methods you have also tried, all in the spirit of getting the most out of life :).

Tell me what you think!
